Super PAC battle continues: Spaulding is the pitchman for Pearce in radio ad; Vermonters First spends $43,000 on mailing for Wilton

Vermont’s two super PACs are engaged in an intergalactic marketing battle in the waning two weeks of the treasurer’s race.

Vermonters First, a conservative PAC, is pulling out all the stops for Wendy Wilton, the Republican candidate for treasurer, with a $43,000 mailing this week on top of a $30,000 TV ad spend last week. Meanwhile, the Vermont Democratic Party, Priorities PAC, a liberal PAC dedicated to ending all super PACs, and Beth Pearce, the Democratic candidate for treasurer, are making combined expenditures of about $27,000 this week on radio and TV ads and mailings.

Former state treasurer Jeb Spaulding, who is now the secretary of the Agency of Administration, narrates a 60-second radio ad for Pearce that extols her ability to keep state investments safe during the recession when national markets teetered. Spaulding declares in the ad paid for by Priorities PAC that Pearce, his former deputy, “is one of the most competent treasurers in the country.”

Clarification: We originally reported that Spaulding said Pearce is the best treasurer in the nation. He actually said Pearce “is one of the most competent treasurers in the country.”
